Literacy Tutors
Thank you for your interest in our volunteer tutor program. As our name suggests, Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults depends on the volunteer service of our trained tutors. We are continually training new tutors through out the year because the need is urgent. Right now more than 100 students are waiting for tutors.
Become a Literacy Tutor!
You can become a tutor if you:
- Are at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma
- Participate in a tutor orientation workshop. (Held monthly)
- Complete the tutor training (Held periodically throughout the year)
- Submit all appropriate paperwork, including references.
- Are willing to commit two hours a week tutoring a student for a total of 100 hours.
Tutor Registration
We will be holding a volunteer orientation workshop each month to let potential tutors know about our program, what we can offer and what you can expect as a volunteer. To find out about our next orientation, check our calendar online under "Upcoming Events and Programs." or give us a call. You must participate in the orientation session before being invited to tutor training.

Tutor Orientation Workshops
Tutor orientation workshops are held at various sites around Northern Delaware throughout the year. The location and schedule of these workshops varies to allow for differing work schedules among participants. All are invited. You must register beforehand to attend.
During the orientation, you can expect to hear information on the following topics:
- You will be trained in techniques usable with Basic Reading and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) students. This will allow LVSA for greater flexibility in selecting a student for you and provide you with a greater variety of techniques and materials to use when tutoring.
- You will be trained to work with students on a one-to-one basis.
- After your training is completed, you will be matched up with a waiting student. Together you and your student set up meeting schedules at mutually convenient times and locations.
- LVSA provides you with all the teaching materials and books you will need at no cost to you. Additional support is always available when needed and requested.
Please check the calendar for training dates.
The next orientation sessions will be announced soon. We will hold an English as a second language focused tutor training in June.
Please download the workshop schedule and if you are interested, please call or email LVSA to reserve your spot at orientation.
