LVSA Tutors
Thank you for your interest in our volunteer tutor program. As our name suggests, Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults depends on the volunteer service of our trained tutors. We are continually training new tutors through out the year because the need is urgent. Right now more than 50 individuals are waiting for tutors.
Join the LVSA Family -Become a Tutor!
You can become a tutor if you:
- Are at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma
- Participate in a tutor orientation workshop.
- Complete the tutor training (Held quarterly throughout the year)
- Submit all appropriate paperwork, including references.
- Are willing to commit six hours a week tutoring a learner/learners for 24 hours per month.
Tutor Registration
We will be holding tutor orientation workshops a month prior to tutor training to let potential tutors know about our program and what you can expect as a tutor. To find out about our next orientation, check our calendar online under "Upcoming Events and Programs" or give us a call. You must participate in the orientation session before being invited to tutor training.
Tutor Training
Tutor training is held approximately four times throughout the year. The location and schedule of tutor training varies to allow for differing work schedules among participants. All are invited. You must attend the orientation session prior to training.
During training, you can expect to hear information on the following topics:
- the adult learner
- culture
- phonemic awareness and phonics
- second language acquisition
- techniques and hands on activities
After your training is completed, you will be matched up with waiting learners. Together you set up meetings at mutually convenient times and locations.
LVSA provides you with all the teaching materials and books you will need at no cost to you. Additional support is always available when needed and requested.
