Programs
Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults serves adult learners and their families in Northern Delaware through:
- One-to-One and Small Group Tutoring
Individuals or small groups meet with their tutor at a mutually convenient site two times a week. - Classes
Class instruction is offered at the William "Hicks" Anderson Center, the Wilmington Library and the Woodlawn Library (all in the city of Wilmington) for basic reading learners.
Once enrolled in the program, learners meet regularly with tutors at mutually convenient times and locations, such as churches, libraries, work sites, and community centers. All tutors receive at least 21 hours of professional training and commit to 60 hours of volunteer tutoring service per year (July 1 - June 30, programs run on the fiscal year versus the calendar year).
Basic Literacy

- The goal is to reach a proficiency level at which a student can enter an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, which will offer further education to those interested.
English Language Learners (ELL)
- For learners for whom English is not their native language.
- Learners meet with a tutor twice weekly for one and a half hours each meeting to learn reading and practice conversational skills in English.
- Individual lessons are tailored to a learner’s educational needs and native culture and language.
