LVSA Facts
- According to the 2003 NAAL (National Assessment of Adult Literacy) 13% of adults in the country are functioning at the lowest literacy levels, unable to read a medicine bottle or fill out a job application .
- LVSA volunteers receive 21 hours of professional training and commit to 100 hours of volunteer tutoring service.
- On average, more than 150 people are on the waiting list for a tutor.
- Last year volunteer tutors contributed 16,000 hours of service, worth $400,000, to improve literacy in Delaware.
- LVSA’s one-to-one approach is the key to our success. People helping people on a personal, interactive, individual basis has proven to be the most effective way to improve literacy in adults.
- LVSA students include basic literacy students (native-born, English-speaking adults) and ESL students (foreign-born adults).
- Since 1982, LVSA has served more than 2,500 adults.
