Annie Coons watches The Beantown Scrabblers strategically place letter tiles on their board

SCRABBLE® Spellebration 2011 a Success

A rare October snowstorm did not deter LVSA supporters and SCRABBLE® Spellebration fans from coming out to play SCRABBLE® and raise money for literacy programs on October 29.  Sixteen teams competed at the annual fundraiser held at the Widener University Law School in Wilmington.  More than $8,000 was raised.

Organizers awarded prizes for the first-, second-, and third-place teams, and gave out door prizes to many lucky players. Taking first place for the fourth year in a row was the team Beantown Scrabblers.  Word Witches took second place, and the Wise Guys won third place. Participants also took their chances at winning several elegant prize baskets at the Pick-of-the-Letter raffle. The competition is a unique combination of the word games SCRABBLE®, Words with Friends, and Bananagrams, with separate teams arranging a fixed amount of letter tiles for the highest-scoring board.

Honorary Chair Annie Coons, wife of  Delaware Senator Chris Coons, spoke at the event and chose the category winners for the Best Costumes (the VGALs+) and Best Team Name (The Spellbinders).

In keeping with the upcoming holiday, several teams came dressed in Halloween themed costumes or chose clever names such as the Word Witches and Spellbound. Participants enjoyed a full lunch and snacks and beverages all afternoon. All proceeds from the event benefit LVSA programs in adult literacy.

Special thanks to sponsors WFSF Bank and Morris and Morris LLC Counselors at Law.
